Antti Tolvi (b.1977 in Panelia Finland) is sound artist, composer and performer living and working in Turku / Kemiö Island Finland. He has been one of the most important names in the field of experimental music scene in Finland since 2002. Antti has performed over 400 times on three continents and 16 solo records have been released from Antti. Since 2016, Antti has held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated many group exhibitions. Setting up happenings and festivals is also part of Antti´s artistic practice. Yearly Kiilan Äänipäivät sound art festival since 2014, smaller events since 2001 and kelluu performance art events in Turku (with Anna Tahkola) 2026.

When performing, Tolvi’s presence effortlessly moves on the border between performing and “just” being present. It increases the experiencer’s ways of being. His work is often about the potentials and specific qualities, e.g a person or a object have, regardless of whether they are doing something at that moment or not. One could also talk about specific vibrational frequencies, often concretely, when something is playing or is ready to play.

Antti´s practice has been focused around just listening almost two decades now. By listening, Antti means listening, which is not only listening with our ears, but listening with the whole being. Just listening what happens in inside and outside of us. Practicing listening also inseparably includes practicing relaxation. We cannot hear very subtly anything if our mind is fixed somewhere. In other words, in this practice, we pay attention to human nature, while being sensitive to the particularities of space and form.

One day Antti realized that for people who are not trained listening for years or for whom the sounds doesn’t have huge effect, it can be difficult to reach the depth and space that he tries to offer in his works. In recent years, Antti´s works has started to take shape more as multi-sensory installations, spatial experiences and performances, in all of which sounds still play a central role. In Antti´s works sounds have expanded into more performance style of presentations, sounds has taken visual forms, Antti has started to composed for winds and lights, installations includes body sensations (sonic bed/sofas, sound hand/foot baths), compositions for touching (one-to-one performances) etc.
