Offside, a new independent project space for contemporary art in Vaasa, Finland, hosts exhibitions, projects, and events as its core activities. It acts as a meeting point and contact hub for Ostrobothnian artists domestically and abroad.

Offside Signal was a test tone ringing out in the periphery. During a one-night performance event and a one-day exhibition, viewers got to manipulate flowing, microscopic elements of an art installation, experience performances, painting, and video.

Offside Signal gave the chance to experience a place truly on the offside. Some of the performances worked with the possibilities and confines of the vast halls of the Sugar Factory, and a few opened studios showcase ongoing artistic processes.

Exhibition by Verkligheten

29.8 – 24.9.2024

Offside #2 continued from August 29 to September 24, 2024, with the exhibition “We dug in the earth, and” by Verkligheten from Umeå (Sweden). The exhibition opened on the 28th of August. The exhibition reached out to Vaasa’s western neighbour city Umeå, exhibiting artists working in similar settings and on similar terms as we were – making, showing, and promoting contemporary art in a peripheral region.

Offside #1 opened on May 21, 2022. The opening day of the exhibition was a combined performance festival and an art opening. The space used for the exhibition was an old furniture shop covering two floors with a total space of 1200 m². The exhibition included the works of a mixed group of active contemporary international artists. The works presented constituted a wide variety of materials and techniques, such as paintings, sculptures, installations, and video art.
